Springfield, Illinois (Wand)-Saturday, the synthetic ice rink opened in downtown Springfield.

As WAND shared the lead, a group of senior high school students from across Sangamon County brought a link to the Old State House grounds.

Called the CEO of Sangamon County, this group provides senior high school seniors with hands-on experience in running a business.

Nabih Elhajj, program’s chief facilitator, said he would like to find a new place after the successful ice skating rink behind Scheels last year.

“I thought this was a place where we could gather the entire community from everywhere in the city,” El Haji said. “From the background of the Old State House and the history of this space, we thought it was an ideal place for us.”

Students like Chandana Poola said this was a great opportunity to gain business experience in high school.

“You get a hands-on experience where you can meet people and think about all the logistics of what you need to do to run your business,” says Poola. “All the challenges we have need to find a solution.”

High school students oversee every aspect of the skating rink, from project planning to execution.
