Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait sells for a record $ 35 million at auction | Entertainment

New York (AP) — A self-portrait of Frida Kahlo showing an artist with the face of her husband Diego Rivera in the middle of the forehead was sold on Tuesday at Sotheby’s in New York for $ 34.9 million. Works by Latin American artists.

The 1949 painting “Diego and I” depicts the turbulent relationship between Carlo and Rivera. Rivera was far more famous than her life, but has lost her fame in recent years.

Rivera’s paintings were former record holders for the highest auction prices ($ 9.8 million in 2018) for works by Latin American artists.

Anna Di Stasi, Latin American art director at Sotheby’s, said “Diego and I” were painted the same year Rivera began her relationship with her friend, movie star Maria Felix. Di Stasi described the work as “a summary of all of Carlo’s passions and pains, the Tour de Force of the artist’s raw emotional power at the peak of her abilities.”

A Sotheby’s spokesperson said the painting was purchased for his personal collection by Eduardo F. Costantini, the founder of the museum in Buenos Aires. Sotheby’s did not reveal the identity of the seller.
