The average number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 daily decreased by 14%
Newly released data from the Illinois Public Health Service indicate that the number of cases and hospitalizations for Covid in Illinois have increased and are now declining.
The average number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 daily has decreased by 14% in the past week, and the number of people hospitalized for the virus has decreased by 7% from a week ago. The number of Covid-positive patients in the intensive care unit has declined slightly recently. However, 43% of all Illinois ICU patients tested positive for the virus.
According to IDPH, the majority of the most ill Covid-19 patients were not completely vaccinated.
The number of people currently hospitalized for the virus is 6,695, down from the peak pandemic of 7,380 on January 12, 2022. ((IDPH does not distinguish data 1,120 people (based on those who are being treated for a virus-related illness or who test positive during treatment for another illness) are receiving intensive care with Covid-19.
Intensive care capacity remains an issue in some counties. In the southern Illinois region, which covers more than 20 counties, only two of the 71 ICU beds in the region are reported to be available. The suburban Cook County has 92% ICU capacity, and Will County and Kankakee County have 93% capacity. Illinois currently has an average of 27,800 new Covid cases per day, up from an average of 32,172 a week ago.
