East Rutherford, NJ (AP) — The New York Giants has hired Buffalo Bills Assistant General Manager Joe Shane as the new General Manager.
Co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch made the announcement on Friday. It’s been a little over a week since we interviewed nine candidates in the first round and started a search with three second interviews.
“Through our research, Joe was impressed with his ability to convey a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team,” Mara said. “His philosophy and collaborative approach to building rosters and coaching staff is consistent with what we were looking for in a general manager.”
Shane nodded to Adam Peters, assistant general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, and Ryan Pauls, executive director of players for the Kansas City.
Shane faces a major reconstruction process. The Giants have played once since winning the Super Bowl XLVI in February 2012. In the past season, he has suffered double-digit defeats for five consecutive seasons, including a record of 4-13.
His first job is to find a coach to replace Joe Judge, who was fired last week after throwing 10-23 in two seasons. The interview will probably start next week.
42-year-old Shane should be able to help the team in the draft. New York has 5th and 7th picks overall.
GM’s work began on January 10 when 70-year-old Dave Gettleman retired after setting a record of 19-46 in four seasons. The 40-year-old judge, who had high expectations in the first season 6-10, was dismissed the day after suffering an injury, and it was a disappointing season with six consecutive losses.
The Giants began an interview for the job of General Manager two days after Gettleman retired, talking to virtually nine candidates. Shane hit the lead-off and stayed there.
Shane was interviewed for the second time at the Giants Team Headquarters on Tuesday, followed by Chiefs Pauls on Wednesday and Peters on Thursday.
Shane has 20 years of scouting and executive experience in the NFL, including the last five years in Bills. He spent most of the last decade at the Miami Dolphins front office.
Shane’s first NFL job was in 2000 as an intern at the Carolina Panthers ticket office. He worked for Panthers for seven seasons (2001-07) under the current Bills General Manager, Brandon Bean.
The Giants have been four coaches since 2016 when Ben McAdoo was hired. He led the Giants to their only playoff berth, but he was fired the following year in the midst of a 3-13 season, including Eli Manning’s benching.
Pat Shurmur was hired in 2018 and was 9-23 years old before being fired two seasons later. This trend continued under Judge, a former New England Special Team Coordinator.
Shane has been the team’s fifth general manager since 1979, when George Young, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame, began the process of turning around a stumbled franchise. He led the Giants to eight playoff berths and two Super Bowl titles and joined the NFL front office in 1998. Ernie Accorsi has been running the club since 1998-06 and hired Tom Cofflin in 2004 to lay the foundation for two more titles. Jerry Reese took office in 2007 and, in combination with Kafrin, won the Super Bowl after the 2007 and 2011 seasons. McAdoo was hired after McAdoo and Reese were fired in December 2017 following Manning’s failure to bench.
