Police say an 80-year-old man arrested after an apartment fire in Arlington Heights, Illinois, is leaving the unit “uninhabitable” today.

Arlington Heights, Illinois (WLS)-A person was arrested after a housing complex was struck by a fire in Arlington Heights early Friday morning.

According to the Arlington Heights police station, an 80-year-old man lived in an apartment on the ground floor, which is believed to have had a fire. He was detained after issuing a statement to the police about the fire.

Police said the fire did not kill or injure, but about one-third of the building was incapable of living.

The Arlington Heights Fire and Police Department responded to the fire at Stonebridge Luxury Apartments at 400 West Rand Road around 12:22 am on Friday. First responders were unable to enter certain units where the fire was concentrated due to heavy smoke and flames, but swift evacuation of the rest of the building, including each of the other 95 individual apartments. Was carried out.

Most residents were allowed to return home, but about 30 families were displaced. The Red Cross has provided support services to refugees.

One neighbor noticed a distraught man screaming to rescue the crew before he saw him getting into the car and trying to speed up.

“He almost hit a police officer, and then he just took off!” Said his neighbor.

Police said the investigation was underway because of concerns about the neighbors.

Police have not yet charged interested parties in custody because the cause of the fire is under investigation.
