Rye, New Hampshire (AP) — Launched by a junior high school student in New Hampshire in October 2020, a small boat containing photographs, foliage, acorns, and a quarter of the state was discovered 462 days later — by a sixth grader in Norway. ..
The 6-foot-long Lyriptides was adorned with children’s artwork and equipped with a tracking device that silenced part of the journey. It was discovered on February 1st on Smera, a small island near Dyleness, Norway. , Portsmouth Herald reported on Monday.
It lost its hull and keel on an 8,300-mile journey and was covered with gooseneck barnacles, but the deck and cargo hold were still intact. The student Karel Nunchich, who found it, took the boat to school, and he and his classmates enthusiastically opened it last week. The Norwegian school is planning to call a student at Rye Middle School soon.
Cassie Stymiest, Executive Director of the Maine Education Passage, said: A non-profit organization that began working with schools on projects in 2018. “But these kids poured their hopes, dreams and wishes into it. I tend to find it useful from time to time.”
The students set out on a boat to the Atlantic Ocean and followed that path. They dealt with the retirement of teacher Sheria Adams and the long period of GPS quietness.
The boat returned online during the hurricane season and registered plot points at the same latitude as Ireland in August and September. Then it disappeared again. On January 30, they learned that the boat appeared to have collided with land just west of a small Norwegian island.
“I was surprised that the boat actually arrived somewhere,” said 7th grade Molly Flynn. “I thought it would get stuck in the middle (on the map), but it really succeeded. It was really, really cool and amazing.”
