Struggling Edmonton Oilers fires Dave Tippett

Edmonton, Alberta-The struggling Edmonton Oilers have fired Dave Tippett, according to two people who know the decision directly.

The move was not announced, so it was confirmed on Thursday by people who spoke to the Associated Press on anonymous terms. One of them said assistant Jay Woodcroft would replace Tippet as a coach.

After starting season 16-5-0, the Oilers went to 7-13-3 in the head scratch performance of the team led by stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Edmonton (23-18-3) is fifth in the NHL’s Pacific Division, five points behind the wildcard spot and lost in the last two games.

The shooting was the seventh coach change at the NHL this season, and the last two days after Martin St. Louis replaced Dominique Dusham in Montreal, the lowest ranking, after reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last season. This is the second time.

The 60-year-old Tippet was appointed coach of the Oilers in May 2019, three weeks after Ken Holland was hired as president of GM and hockey operations. Tippet has signed a three-year deal, but the Oilers move beyond the first round of the watch playoffs, despite Dry Zytle (2020) and McDavid (2021) receiving the Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL MVP. I have never done it.

Tippet taught Phoenix / Arizona Coyote from 2009-10 to 2016-17. He won the Jack Adams Award as this year’s coach in his first season.

He had 28 relationships in 14 seasons with Coyote and the Dallas Stars, who coached for six seasons, and arrived in Edmonton with a record of 553-413-120. Tippet, who played over 700 NHL games, was a senior advisor to Seattle Kraken before joining Edmonton.

This is Edmonton’s second coach change in less than four years. The Oilers fired Todd McLellan in November 2018 after the start of 9-10-1. Ken Hitchcock coached the team in the last 62 games of the season.
